Customer Engagement Scripts
Every interaction with a customer is an opportunity to start a selling/educational conversation. A conversation does not need to be a sales pitch – it’s simply offering assistance to the customer.
You can identify what the customer needs by asking them and by watching what products they stop to examine in the meat department. Tell customers about specials that may be of interest, or new or value-added products.
Don’t assume that your staff will know naturally how to engage customers and encourage sales. Salesmanship is a skill that must be practiced. You can help your staff become comfortable promoting products by giving them the opportunity to practice in a low stress environment. It also helps to provide some suggested scripts that enable staff to see how sales can be encouraged by offering customer service.
Following are examples of some opening lines that staff can use with customers:
Did you see our special on lean ground beef? It’s nutritious and can be cooked in so many different ways. We’ve got free recipe booklets with lots of different meal ideas.
(Encourages customer to stock up.)Are you looking for a quick meal on the barbecue? These kebobs are pre-seasoned and cook in just a few minutes.
(Steers customer to a value-added product.)Have you ever tried a roast on the barbecue? It makes a great meal and keeps your kitchen cool. There are recipes in this booklet.
(Introduces customer to a cooking method they might not have considered.)Are you shopping for a special meal? These prime rib roasts are an excellent quality. These recipe booklets give you great directions on how to cook it.
(Encourages customer to buy a better, higher margined cut.)The family packs are less expensive per kilogram, and if you can’t use it all at once you can freeze it and have it on hand. Saves you a trip to the store.
(Encourages customers to buy in larger quanitities.)These recipe booklets have some excellent recipes for using these cuts of beef.
(Encourages customer to try a product he or she may not have bought before.)
