Resources to help navigate FOP regulations
Health Canada introduced new front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labelling regulations which came into force on July 20, 2022. Canada Beef has taken a proactive approach to provide stakeholders and interested industry partners with information they will find helpful as they implement the new regulations.

The new program applies to products sold at retail whether produced in Canada or imported. Under the new program, food products that meet or exceed specific thresholds for saturated fat, sugars or sodium will have to carry an FOP nutrition symbol. This will have implications for beef sold at retail. The food industry has until January 1, 2026, to comply with the new regulations.

To support the beef industry’s transition to and understanding of the new program, Canada Beef has prepared some support tools for our partners and stakeholders.
  1. An industry brief published in July announced the new program and outlined how the program will work, including the criteria that will be used to determine which products will be affected.
  2. A Beef Watch newsletter is available here and provides an overview of the implications for beef products sold in Canada, including which products qualify for exemptions and important Health Canada links.
  3. A detailed educational resource for industry to support the implementation of the program for applicable beef products. This will be available online in December.
