 World Iron Awareness Week was hosted by several countries, including Canada, from August 28-September 3, 2023. The awareness campaign presented an excellent opportunity to promote beef—one of nature’s best sources of iron. Sharing information about iron and the iron status of Canadians is a high priority for Canada Beef’s Health and Nutrition team. Beef can significantly contribute to improving the iron status of Canadians, particularly vulnerable populations such as infants, pregnant women, and women of childbearing age. These, and other iron facts were highlighted as part of Canada Beef’s World Iron Awareness Week. A dedicated web page was created for the Thinkbeef.ca website along with a robust social media campaign directed at consumers, beef producers, and health professionals to promote the importance of beef in the diet as it relates to iron. Two blog posts developed for Thinkbeef.ca can be found here.   The Canada Beef social media blitz across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter reached 23,440 impressions across all platforms. The most engaging content focused on the effects of low iron and facts on how to get the most iron into one’s diet. Canada Beef also reached out to 2,849 nutritional professionals, sending out high-level key messages by email the week before the campaign which netted a 40% open rate. Registered Dietitian ambassadors delivered the social media campaign for health professionals; you can view the Instagram reel here. There were also supporting articles in several professional publications including Canfit Pro, Occupational Health Nurses Association, and Canadian Food Focus. While several of these resources were developed specifically for Iron Awareness Week, the information will be re-purposed for other social media campaigns, partner articles, and articles, and has become a permanent page dedicated to iron awareness at Thinkbeef.ca.
