YATA is a local Japanese-style supermarket with 11 stores located in Hong Kong. YATA targets local customers who shop daily for high-quality fresh food. YATA is a long-time partner of Canada Beef; last year the Canadian Beef International Institute (CBII) China worked with YATA on several successful Canadian beef promotions. This year’s Canadian beef event was launched in eight YATA stores from August 9-15. The Canadian chilled beef items that were promoted included boneless short ribs, strip loin and rib eye.

The promotion was advertised to shoppers through in-store point-of-sale materials, online apps, the YATA website and social media platforms. In-store demonstrations with product sampling also took place to introduce Canadian beef to consumers.

Canadian beef sales grew 233% during the promotion compared to the non-promotional period and were up 37% compared with the promotion at the same time last year.

The success of this event demonstrates consumer interest in purchasing Canadian beef. This type of event offers an opportunity to enhance Canadian beef awareness and build sales among consumers in Hong Kong as well as the chance to work with loyal supplier chain partners and end-users.

COVID-19 Updates
The recent resurgence of COVID-19 in various cities affected travel during the holiday season (Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day Holiday) with travel down 18% compared with the same holiday last year. Tourist spending was down 26% as many people chose not to travel. On the upside, local spending was up as people stayed home and a number of stimulus measures were put in place to spur consumption.

In Hong Kong, daily new cases are still over 4,000. Hong Kong has abandoned its COVID-19 hotel-quarantine policy for all arrivals as of September 26, replacing it with the "0+3" rule under which all those arriving from overseas and Taiwan need to self-monitor for possible COVID-19 infection for three days after entering the city. Meanwhile, the government also relaxed some quarantine measures including changing the maximum number of diners per table to 12 from 8, and the maximum size for banquets to 240 from 120 people. The purpose is to attract more travellers to Hong Kong and stimulate local consumption.
