Online Canadian beef promotion
South Korea has become one of the world’s most advanced online retail markets, equipped with very sophisticated logistics networks including a cold chain system. Over 30% of retail food and beverage products were purchased online in 2020 (latest figure available) and this market is growing rapidly.

Online retailers continue to lead the growth in grocery sales in the Korean retail sector, including chilled and frozen beef. This is mostly due to increased consumer demand for convenience and value along with a desire to avoid crowds.

The top players in food and beverage e-commerce are Market Kurly (organic premium food and beverage), Coupang (social commerce mall), and SSG.COM (owned by Shinsegae Group which runs the Shinsegae department stores, Emart hypermart stores, and convenience stores).

Canada Beef International Institute Japan (CBII) supported a Canadian beef promotion on SSG.COM’s mobile app for a week starting October 13, 2022. Over 2 million consumers use the app every day.

Frozen Canadian beef cuts were featured and included short ribs, short plate and flat iron. This was the first time that Canadian beef was promoted at a leading online shopping mall in Korea and the promotion was well received by consumers.

South Korea’s imports of Canadian beef have been growing significantly in volume and value this year. Some major retail chains and online malls are showing an interest in promoting and selling Canadian beef.

Canada Beef food truck
The Canada Beef food truck appeared at three venues in September. These events ranged from community festivals to food markets. The truck was greeted enthusiastically and the menu offerings were well-received. The food truck will be visiting venues until the end of March 2023.

Please check out the Food Truck page Canada Beef Japan website for updates on where the food truck will be located. Updates will also be posted on the Canada Beef Japan IG account.

South Korea COVID-19 Update
The daily number of COVID-19 infections declined in mid-October to between 10,000-30,000. As the virus wanes, the government has removed all antivirus restrictions for inbound travellers.

Consumer prices rose 5.6% in September year-over-year (YOY) and prices of imported beef also continued to increase, rising 12.7%, YOY.

Japan COVID-19 Update
As the number of infections nationwide continues to decrease, restrictions on new entries of foreign nationals were lifted on October 11. Visa exemptions for short-term stays apply to citizens of an eligible country (including Canada). Japan also has scrapped the daily entry cap of 50,000 people.
