IMS Human nutrition and health committee meet
Canada Beef participated in the International Meat Secretariat (IMS) Human Nutrition and Health (HNH) Committee meeting in Paris, France, in September. This committee is a collaboration of global nutrition professionals dedicated to providing current, evidence-based information about the nutritional qualities of red meat and its role in a healthy, sustainable diet.

In addition to sponsoring the presentation, "The Role of Protein Quality in Human Health, " presented by Dr. Rajavel Elango of the University of British Columbia, Canada Beef provided an update on initiatives underway in Canada to raise awareness of iron deficiency among Canadians for health professionals.

Canada Beef Director, Health and Nutrition, Karine Rekunyk, RD, told the gathering of nutrition experts from more than a dozen countries that iron deficiency awareness is often complicated by inconsistent information on the amount of iron in foods, making it challenging to find reliable lists. She then shared Canada Beef’s efforts to bring some clarity to the situation by developing a list using Canadian government regulatory terms, categorizing iron content based on labelling claims.

Being a member of the IMS allows Canada Beef to participate in the HNH committee, highlighting emerging issues in nutrition science and contributing current, evidence-based information about the nutritional qualities of red meat and its role in a healthy, sustainable diet, noted Rekunyk.

“Sharing Canadian expertise with the committee of global nutrition professionals allows Canada Beef the opportunity to provide nutrition intelligence and research to inform international perspectives and collaborations on programs that positively affect consumer behaviour with groups like the Global Meat Alliance,” she said.
