New resources on healthy aging available Canada Beef’s Health and Nutrition team recently launched a suite of healthy aging resources. These resources communicate protein's valuable role in preserving muscle, independence and overall health as people age. The development of this work is a result of background research completed by Canada Beef in the last fiscal year, which identified seniors as the fastest-growing demographic in Canada. About 7 million seniors live in Canada today; by 2040, nearly one in four Canadians will be 65-plus (10 million). Frailty is a threat to healthy aging - one in four Canadians over 65 live with frailty – the research found that protein is a key part of the prevention or management of frailty. Eating well in the older years is key to optimizing brain, bone, muscle and immune health. Calorie needs decrease with age; however, studies support higher protein intakes for seniors, so including protein-rich meat such as beef in meals can help seniors optimize their protein intakes, a key strategy for aging well. The new resources include two infographics (Stay Strong and Protein Check) and one educational health brochure. The Stay Strong resource will be offered as a poster for doctors’ offices, and the Protein Check resource will be displayed as an engagement poster at health professional conferences. The educational brochure (Eat Well. Age Well) will be available for doctors’ offices to order for their senior patients. The information is available at Thinkbeef.ca in the Healthy Aging section. The resources are also available to order under the Thinkbeef.ca resource centre. These resources will be showcased at two upcoming health professional conferences and distributed through doctors' offices via the Sample Cupboard program. The information and resources are also promoted in several publications, including an article in CanFit Pro, which reached 65,000 health and fitness professionals, and one in an association magazine for Occupational Health Nurses. Pending is an article in the Canadian Automobile Association magazine and Zoomer, two popular publications in the senior demographic. Back to main page KARINE REKUNYK Director, Health and Nutrition |
