CAFERES JAPAN 2022 trade show
Canada Beef International Institute (CBII) Japan participated in CAFERES JAPAN 2022, the largest trade show in Japan focused on the café and restaurant industries. CAFERES JAPAN is also known as an exhibition where people from foodservice-related industries from around the world gather to discuss food trends and announce the latest technology.

This was the first time CBII Japan participated in the restaurant industry trade show. The event, held July 27 – 29, provided an opportunity to meet with operators in the Greater Tokyo Area.

CBII Japan secured three booths to display Canadian beef products and distribute samples to trade show attendees.

CBII Japan’s supply partner introduced its newly developed Canada Beef products targeting café and restaurant buyers. The show attracted over 24,000 buyers (a 20% increase over last year).

After COVID-19, the café and restaurant sectors anticipate there will be robust investment in their industry as they continue to be an important place for people to gather and interact. Canada Beef looks forward to being one of the supply partners.

Canada Beef Food Truck
The Canada Beef Food Truck appeared at seven venues during the August summer holiday season. These events ranged from community festivals to summer markets. The truck was greeted enthusiastically and the menu offerings were well-received. The food truck will be visiting venues until the end of March 2023.

Please check out the Canada Beef Japan website for updates on where the food truck will be located. Updates will also be posted on the Canada Beef Japan IG account.

Japan COVID-19 Update
While the seventh wave of COVID-19 infections may have affected restaurant sales in August, restaurant sales in July were up 14.5% year-over-year (YOY) and down only 1.5% from 2019, demonstrating a strong sign of recovery.

Japan’s total beef import volumes in July were 61,289 tonnes, up 0.3% YOY, and imports from Canada were 5,329 tonnes, up 13% YOY. Offal cuts grew 40% YOY, representing 14% of the total volumes of Canadian beef due to an increase in demand from barbecue restaurants.

South Korea COVID-19 Update
The number of COVID-19 infections stabilized in early September at around 90,000. The government introduced various stimulus measures to boost the economy and stabilize prices ahead of the Chuseok fall harvest holiday in mid-September.

The temporary elimination of the 18.6% import duty has provided opportunities for importers to sell Canadian beef ribs at a couple of major retail store chains. Korea’s total beef imports in 2022 (January-August quarantine statistics) were 317,443 tonnes, up 8.4% YOY, and imports from Canada were 14,977 tonnes, up 131.9% YOY.
