Sharing the most recent health research
Research monitoring is an important element of Canada Beef’s Health and Nutrition portfolio. This work supports industry efforts to disseminate evidence-based information and translate the latest science about beef and human health into relatable messaging. A number of new nutrition research reviews and facts were recently published to enable prompt and credible responses to emerging nutrition issues.

Three new “Just the Facts” research summaries posted at Thinkbeef.ca:
  1. Teenage girl meat intake and iron status: This study found a higher prevalence of iron deficiency among teenage girls adhering to diets that limit meat, and in particular red meat.
  2. 3:1 Animal to Plant Protein Ratio is Optimal for Children 9-18: This Canadian study found that children were at risk of developing nutrient inadequacies when most of their nutritional protein is derived from plant-based foods. A diet with three times more animal protein than plant protein was found to be the optimal ratio.
  3. Red meat intake not associated with obesity: This is the most comprehensive review of controlled dietary intervention trials to examine the relationship between red meat intake and obesity. It concludes the studies did not show an effect of unprocessed red meat on weight gain, obesity or related metabolic conditions.
Two new handouts created:
  1. Beef Helps Build Healthier Plates: Nutrition Report that examines how beef consumption is associated with more vegetable intakes and better diet quality.
  2. Foods That Provide Iron: This new handout will be featured as part of World Iron Awareness Week in October.
Three factsheets updated:
  1. Perspective on Red Meat Consumption in Canada: Additional consumption statistics added
  2. Beef Consumption Backgrounder: 2024 data added.
  3. The Role of Beef in School-Aged Children’s Nutrition in Canada: three new studies and a new protein chart added.
