Trade shows in South Korea
South Korea has become the third largest export destination for Canadian beef, driven by strong demand and continued tariff reductions under the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement. Canada Beef International Institute (CBII) Japan along with major partner companies joined forces to participate in two food shows in June and July of this year.

Seoul Food & Hotel June 7-10

Aligned with other premium Canadian food and beverage products under the Canada banner, CBII Japan showcased popular Canadian chilled and frozen beef cuts alongside Canadian beef packers from Korea and their distribution partners.

Over 37,000 buyers visited the show, an increase of 200% from 2021. Current and potential customers visited the booth for meetings with CBII Japan and partner distributors and over 1,200 visitors sampled Canadian beef.

BOFOOD June 29-July 2
The Busan International Food Expo (BOFOOD) is a regional food and beverage trade show reaching retail, foodservice and wholesale customers in the Busan region (the second largest population in South Korea).

This is the first time CBII Japan participated in a food show in South Korea outside of Seoul. Over 43,000 buyers visited the show, up over 36% from 2021. More than 2,000 visitors tasted Canadian beef samples over the four-day show. Regional beef import companies, catering companies and restaurants visited the CBII Japan booth to discuss opportunities to use Canadian beef.

South Korea COVID-19 Update
Most social distancing restrictions were lifted in April and as of early July, the number of daily COVID-19 infections had decreased to around 7,000. Since then, the daily number of COVID-19 infections greatly increased to 100,000 at the end of July. The government is urging people to receive their third or fourth vaccination.

Korea’s total beef imports in 2022 (January-May) were 223,007 tonnes, down 3.2% YOY and imports from Canada were 7,434 tonnes, up 58.1% YOY. Korea’s beef imports from Canada in May 2022 were 2,021 tonnes, up 149.2% YOY.

Japan COVID-19 Update
With a decrease in the number of infections nationally, Japan is welcoming back foreign tourists after more than two years. The foodservice industry is moving towards recovery. Sales at barbecue restaurants grew by 59.6% YOY due to an increase in demand during the Golden Week holiday in early May.

Japan’s total beef import volumes in May were 53,286 tonnes, down 9% YOY, and imports from Canada were 3,885 tonnes, down 15% YOY. Volumes of Canadian chilled beef were down 53% YOY due to supply chain disruptions. As a result, the chilled to frozen ratio continued to fall to 10% in May.
