![]() Importance of Protein presentation at nutrition conference Canada Beef participated in the Canadian Nutrition Society (CNS) Annual Conference held in Montreal May 8-10. The conference attracted 400 health professionals, including researchers, dietitians, and public health experts. The CNS is a prominent nutrition association in Canada, known for its strong network of members and credibility among professionals. CNS offers sponsored sessions at their annual conference. Canada Beef, Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) and the Canadian Pork Council collaborated as part of a joint effort to leverage a sponsorship opportunity to facilitate a presentation addressing the importance of protein quality and its assessment methods. The session ‘Evolving Perspectives on Protein Quantity and Quality for Optimal Health,’ was delivered in person on May 9 and featured two well-known protein experts, along with a highly respected nutrition researcher who chaired the session. The presentation included new Canadian data showing that many Canadians are not meeting minimum protein recommendations. The topic chosen was timely, considering the consultation on protein quality assessment methods circulated by Health Canada late last year. CNS hosted a pre-conference workshop on the topic of animal versus plant protein, and Canada Beef wanted to ensure that impactful messaging was offered to counteract possible plant-based bias. Having two highly accomplished, independent researchers deliver this message ensured maximum impact. Canada Beef, along with DFC was invited to meet with the CNS board of directors to share thoughts on industry priorities, and ideas on areas for future educational collaborations. Topics discussed included exploring iron as a future theme for a health professional workshop, as well as a discussion about the need for a new national dietary survey to be conducted by Health Canada (the current one is over 10 years old). The session was recorded and is available for viewing at no cost for five years, on the CNS educational portal. See link following. View the session here.
