![]() Iron Deficiency webinar well received Canada Beef, through Thinkbeef.ca, organized a webinar for health professionals on May 29. The webinar, ‘Iron Deficiency in Canada: A Growing Concern Dietitians Can Address,’ featured Registered Dietitian (RD) and Health Canada research scientist, Dr. Marcia Cooper. The speakers also included RD Devon Peart, consulting dietitian with the Cleveland Clinic, with RDs Carol Harrison and Shannon Crocker moderating the webinar. Crystal MacGregor, a Registered Dietitian from Food Island PEI, presented a culinary demonstration. The webinar featured a 75-minute educational session. Some of the key messages presented during the webinar were the high (and growing) prevalence of iron deficiency in Canada, the value of beef for the prevention/management of iron deficiency, and the fact that plant-based dietary guidance (Canada’s Food Guide) has contributed to the growing concern of iron deficiency. The presentation also offered easy, practical strategies to boost iron in the kitchen. A ‘Big Batch Beef’ recipe was demonstrated along with tips dietitians can share to help clients create iron-rich meals. Webinar registrants were provided with a comprehensive iron toolkit, which included fast facts about iron, dietary strategies to share with their clients, food tips, shareable recipes and food lists, and a curated collection of scientific references and helpful resources. There were 1,146 registrations, speaking to the tremendous interest in this webinar and the topic, as well as the high calibre of the speakers. The webinar generated many positive comments from attendees about the value of the information presented. In the post-presentation survey, 97% of respondents said it was extremely or very valuable. The work done to research and deliver this webinar, including the tools developed, will be repurposed later this year for World Iron Awareness Week. Download the Iron toolkit and access the webinar here. A new iron chart was also developed, which can be downloaded here. Back to main page ![]() KARINE REKUNYK Director, Health and Nutrition |
