As part of Canada Beef’s COVID-19 Recovery work, the Consumer Marketing Team is launching a Summer Camp program for Canadian kids and their families starting July 7, 2020. The program called “Let’s Make Lunch” is a Facebook Live online camp hosted by nutrition and food skills educator, Andrea Villneff.

“We know that parents are growing tired of making three meals a day, every day,” says Joyce Parslow, Executive Director, Consumer Marketing for Canada Beef. “With many traditional summer activities not happening this year, kids are restless so we are helping families by producing a kid-friendly activity that provides a solution for getting lunch on the table.”

Andrea Villneff is a Canada Beef advocate—you can view her profile here. With a degree in nutrition and a culinary diploma from Liaison College Villneff creates engaging and original content. She has taken her collaborative food-commodity-supported nutrition education classes into school classrooms as part of foods/nutrition curriculum. While the program has been well-received, face-to-face delivery has limited the outreach to specific school locations.

Canada Beef worked with Villneff to develop an online program to deliver those same beef-focused recipe demos and nutrition lesson plans from the classroom program and repurposed them for the Summer Camp Cooking School. “The beauty of this program is that was built from existing materials which meant we could respond quickly to develop this program,” notes Parslow. “By creating an online forum on Facebook Live, content can be made available on a national scale.”

Canada Beef’s Summer Camp Cooking School includes:
  • There will be 8 weekly Facebook Live programs starting July 7 at noon ET, so that folks can ‘cook-along’ while they watch the live lesson delivery. Lessons will be distributed in advance of the weekly lessons along with the featured recipe and matching shopping list that week. Check out the summer camp landing page here.
  • 7 additional cooking videos will be featured on the Let’s Make Lunch Summer Camp playlist along with recipe and shopping pdfs.
  • The program will be promoted will be via our influencer and stakeholder groups, educator relationships, mom influencers and also as part of the MyCanadianBeef consumer campaign outreach.
  • Live programming will be taped and will be accessible after the program for those who missed the scheduled program. Check out this page each week to watch the last episode.
  • Looking ahead to fall, Canada Beef plans to release the programming to schools as part of their nutrition/food curriculum programming.
“We need to reach out to kids and educators to bring the next generation of loyal beef users to the table,” says Parslow. “These audiences can be difficult to reach using traditional media. As well, we are faced with the difficult challenge of getting beef-friendly content into the classroom while working within individual provincial education program mandates. This Summer Camp online program is one way to address that need.”
