![]() Canadian beef in school curriculum Basic food skills are necessary to successfully prepare meals that include beef. Home economics and family studies programs offered to middle and high school youth are essential to developing these important life skills. Given that the cost of beef is often a stretch to limited classroom budgets, Canada Beef’s Consumer Marketing program partnered with the Ontario Family Studies and Home Economics Educators Association (OFSHEEA) to provide educational materials and cover the cost of groceries for preparing four ethnically diverse recipes as part of curriculum lesson plans. ![]() OFSHEEA is a non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating the professional development and personal growth of its members, promoting high-quality Family Studies programs in Ontario. As part of the partnership with Canada Beef, the following resources were delivered: three live online teacher workshops with cooking demonstrations by a professional home economist; an educator podcast with a discussion of the nutrition implications of the government school lunch policy; a guest speaker provided to the OFSHEEA annual symposium on the topic of beef and the brain health connection. Canada Beef also provided four video-based cook-along recipe demonstrations, delivered by a home economist, for teachers to use in their classrooms. ![]() With the OFSHEEA partnership, the recipe and video material were edited to fit within curriculum content for Ontario Family Studies Foods classes, including meatless options for each recipe and links to further Canadian beef nutrition and safe food handling resources. Registered classes were given access to a cook-along video and recipe with an accompanying curriculum guide. The videos show students how to prepare the recipe from start to finish and coordinate with areas of the Foods curriculum. The in-class program began in February 2025 and will run until June 2025. To date, 11 classes from eight schools have participated, reaching 278 students. Teacher Keitha Mahan from Espanola High School said her 23 students loved this lab. “Many saved some to bring home to let their family taste. So many good skills and topics too: hand washing, cross-contamination, knife skills, dishes and the spice breakdown. Thanks for the great video and recipe,” she said. ![]() Back to main page ![]() JOYCE PARSLOW Executive Director, Consumer Marketing |
