Canada Beef promotion at restaurant in Seoul
In the middle of downtown Seoul is a unique restaurant and retail shop called LONG WEEKND which opened in January 2022. It’s the only Canadian-themed restaurant and retailer in Korea. Premium Canadian food and beverage products are sold in the retail shop; these same ingredients are used for menu items in the restaurant.

LONG WEEKND attracts consumers who want to purchase premium Canadian food products, including beef, and experience a fusion-style menu that includes Canadian beef.

Canada Beef International Institute (CBII) Japan participated in a promotion at LONG WEEKND from January 25 to February 18, 2022. The promotion featured Canadian beef middle and barbecue cuts; customers purchasing Canadian beef and/or enjoying a Canadian beef dinner received a small memento. The promotion was so successful that it was extended by one week due to demand.

LONG WEEKND has become very popular because of its unique charm and it is now difficult to book a reservation at the restaurant. Canadian premium quality grain-fed beef has become well known and popular among office workers in its vicinity.

South Korea’s imports of Canadian beef grew significantly in volume and value last year, despite ending 2021 with a suspension of Canadian beef imports, which has since eased. Korea’s beef imports from Canada totalled 9,942 tonnes from January to December in 2021, up 55% in volume and up 87% in value year-over-year (YOY).

South Korea COVID-19 update
In early April, the number of daily COVID-19 infections declined to around 300,000 from the peak of 620,000 in mid-March. The government has pushed back the current 11 p.m. restaurant curfew to midnight and increased the private gathering size limit to 10 people. The new president-elect, who will begin his administration on May 10, promised further alleviation of social distancing restrictions.

Korea’s total beef imports in 2022 (January-March) were 113,493 tonnes, up 10.5% YOY, and imports from Canada were 4,401 tonnes, up 46.4% YOY. Canadian ribs and blade/clod were the leading exporting cuts, representing 44% and 39% of the total volume, respectively.

Japan COVID-19 update
In March, the peak of the Omicron wave appeared to have passed and pandemic measures were lifted across Japan. The Japanese government is considering raising the daily limit of people allowed to enter Japan to 10,000 in April, while planning to remove the current attendance limit for large-scale events as the spread of coronavirus infections slows.

The United States (U.S.) and Japan have reached an agreement to increase the beef safeguard trigger level under the U.S.- Japan Trade Agreement. The new three-trigger mechanism will increase U.S. beef exporters’ ability to meet Japan’s growing demand for beef and it is less likely that Japan will impose higher tariffs on U.S. beef in the future. Japan’s total beef import volumes in February were 44,108 tonnes, about the same as last year. Imports from Canada were 3,697 tonnes.
