Canadian beef on TV home shopping channel in South Korea Canada Beef International Institute (CBII) Korea partnered with NS Home Shopping, one of the largest home shopping TV channels in Korea, to promote Canadian beef. The promotion featured six sales broadcasts in early and mid-January 2023, targeting consumers looking for gifts for the Lunar New Year holiday on January 22, 2023, one of the most important holidays in Korea. From January 21-24, approximately 26 million people (about half of the total population) travelled home to visit relatives, bringing gifts. One of the most popular gifts in Korea is beef, particularly sliced short ribs. For three weeks before the Lunar New Year holiday, online retailers, department stores and supermarkets sell many types of beef gift sets. The holiday offers an important time for beef importers and distributors to optimize beef sales through all possible distribution channels. The NS Home Shopping channel team was impressed with the quality of premium Canadian short ribs and ox tails and chose to sell gift sets of both products (shown following). This is the first time that Canadian beef was sold through a home shopping TV channel in Korea. The NS Home Shopping channel aired six broadcasts promoting the Canadian beef gift packs. A famous comedian and successful beef soup restaurant owner hosted the broadcasts. The hosts demonstrated several popular cooking methods featuring Canadian beef cuts and showed consumers enjoying the product; some of the spots included a short video of a Canadian cattle farm provided by CBII Korea. Here are links to one of the short rib segments and one of the oxtail segments. The two Canadian beef gift sets sold very well, and, given this success, NS Home Shopping plans additional broadcasts in May when consumers buy gifts for Parents’ Day and Teachers’ Day. This partnership also provided an excellent opportunity to raise awareness for Canadian beef. Over 400,000 people watched the six sales broadcasts and learned about premium Canadian beef. Japan COVID-19 Update The government plans to relax current COVID-19 restrictive measures amid increasing calls to rejuvenate an economy hit hard by the outbreak. The government is considering downgrading the status of the disease as the vaccination program, among other factors, has made it less likely to develop a serious illness. South Korea COVID-19 Update The new daily number of COVID-19 infections has declined to 10,000-20,000 as of the end of January. The government is concerned about subvariants resistant to updated vaccines, however, the decision was made to lift the indoor mask mandate from January 30 except for some high-risk places including hospitals, pharmacies, and public transit.
