When Canadian Olympian Sage Watson received the 2021 4-H Canada Distinguished Alumni Award for her passionate advocacy in support of agriculture and the farming community, her role as a Canadian beef ambassador was among the highlights. Watson, who received the award at the annual 4-H Canada Leadership Awards on February 23, was asked about her role as an ambassador for Canada Beef in a wide-ranging interview about her accomplishments with virtual event host Peter Mansbridge. “That’s been such an exciting partnership for me. Growing up on a cattle ranch, I’ve truly learned a lot of what it takes to sustainably grow and raise cattle,” she said. Watson said her work with Canada beef allows her to stay connected to the cattle industry, and to promote sustainability, healthy eating, and the information Canada Beef has available. “I’ve had a lot of fun creating and making recipes with them, showing nutrition tips as an athlete, and sharing that on my platform,” she said. “Canada Beef has been an amazing partnership for me to stay connected to the cattle industry and just to stay connected to a great Canadian company as well.” This passion for the beef industry comes as no surprise to Canada Beef. Watson grew up near Medicine Hat, Alberta, where her family raises commercial and purebred cattle. She credits her ranch roots with helping shape a strong work ethic and, of course, a love for cooking with Canadian beef. That authenticity makes Watson an ideal Canadian beef advocate, said Michele McAdoo, Canada Beef executive director, digital marketing – and alumna of 4-H Ontario’s youth development program. “We were thrilled that Sage really wanted to work with Canada Beef to support the farming community,” said McAdoo. As part of the My Canadian Beef campaign, Watson promotes the nutritional benefits of Canadian beef from an athletic and training perspective as well as the stewardship of farmers and ranchers for the land and cattle under their care. The track and field professional athlete is adept in the kitchen and her love of beef and cooking is evident. “Her audience loves watching her prepare Canada Beef recipes, she is authentic and approachable,” McAdoo said. Under the campaign, Watson shares her love for eating beef as part of a wholesome and well-rounded diet to increase performance and help with physical recovery. She engages with a large running and sports audience through her social platform and posts videos and stories that resonate with her followers. On Instagram, Watson posts regularly to 84K followers. Posts include an Instagram live session between Watson and another Canada Beef influencer, Andrea Buckett. There’s a video to support Canada Beef’s new beef jerky recipe, a story on what she eats in a day, a Valentine’s Day video preparing one of the pan-seared steak recipes, preparing a new recipe, and a story on the Roundup app resource that earned over 20K views. Canada Beef has been extremely pleased to be able to foster its relationship with Watson to serve as a Canadian beef advocate and influencer for consumers in Canada and around the world. Her work has been a tremendous benefit for the beef industry and Canada Beef was pleased to support her nomination to 4-H Canada, said Canada Beef Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Ron Glaser. “Clearly, Sage is a tremendous example of the 4-H ethic in application to all aspects of life and we congratulate her on this latest achievement,” he said. The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes the outstanding leadership and contributions of 4-H alumni to “our communities, country, and world.” Back to main page |
