Canada Beef celebrates 50th Anniversary with Family-Fave recipe contest
Canada Beef presented the Family-Fave Canadian Beef Recipe Contest in September to celebrate its 50th Anniversary. The goal of the contest was to drive awareness of Canadian beef and the Canadian Beef Information Gateway (Gateway) and celebrate the long-standing tradition of Canadian beef at the family dinner table.

Given that Canada Beef last held a recipe contest in 1996 - tied to the theme of the Olympics and the need for convenience - a consumer recipe contest was long overdue.

The 2023 Family-Fave contest celebrated the culinary heritage of Canadians with the intent of including the winning recipes as part of the Gateway. Contestants were asked to share stories about what their submitted recipe meant to them and their families. The sentiments expressed in the family recipe lore reflected the theme of celebrating the heritage of Canada Beef and its 50th Anniversary.

The contest was promoted at the Canadian Beef Industry Conference, on Canada Beef social media platforms, through the Make it Beef Club, beef producer groups and the Culinary Tourism Alliance. The contest entries provided rich content for social media posts.

Contestants uploaded their recipes online into a template. Recipes didn’t have to be unique, but the origins of the recipe had to be disclosed with full credit given to the originator. The process included five questions to prompt stories and background information about the family origins of the recipe.

Recipe entries were sorted, selected, and short-listed as possible winners by a professional home economist. Each short-listed recipe was cooked and evaluated to determine the five winning recipes. The five recipe winners each received a prize of $1,000 cash (in the form of a Visa Gift Card) plus a Canada Beef Look What’s Cooking prize pack. Two recipes were such strong contenders they were awarded runner-up status and these contest entrants received $100 each for their contribution.

Of the recipe submissions, ground beef was the most popular cut, used in 46 recipes, with stewing beef coming in second, used in 18 recipes. Recipes came in from across Canada, with many heart-warming stories of recipes handed down from friends and family.

As well as recipe winners, one grand prize winner was selected by random draw. The grand prize included a Big Green Egg MiniMax barbecue/smoker plus a Canada Beef Steak Your Claim prize pack from the Beef Pride eStore.

The Winners
Each of the stories behind the winning recipes reflected a love for beef and its place as part of family meals, parties and sharing of traditions. The winning recipes were professionally edited and submitted for nutrient analysis. They are featured here along with the recipe creator’s story and a recipe photo. Canada Beef will produce how-to videos for each of the recipes to be added later.

The seven recipes chosen to be part of the Winners Circle Recipe Collection include:

Western Meatballs (shown right), Steak Fajitas, Spicy Steak and Buckwheat Salad (shown left), Slow Cooker Taco Soup, Persian Beef and Celery Stew, Lebanese Meat Pies, and Hand-held Meat Pies.

The grand prize winner, chosen in a random draw, was Juanita Ivanochko (shown left), a rancher from Saskatchewan. Juanita’s recipe featured Blade Pot Roast dinner, which was then stretched to serve as a beef shepherd’s pie as a second meal made from the leftovers.
