Updated Ground Beef Toolkit Canada Beef recently launched the Second Edition of ThinkBeef’s Ground Beef Toolkit. As Canada’s most popular minced meat, ground beef is a foundation for making many of the wholesome home-cooked meals that Canadians love. This important resource was first developed and distributed back in early 2020. It was designed as a comprehensive resource for food and nutrition professionals, culinary students and educators and was a key resource for developing proof points and statements in defense of beef from mandatory Front of Pack labelling on saturated fat content. Since then, Canada Beef’s nutrition team has continued to monitor the research and update the content as new information emerged. The Second Edition includes important changes. In response to user feedback, some content was clarified or expanded to meet reader needs. Additional detail was added to some sections, such as the inclusion of saturated fat values in the nutrition tables in the Nutrients chapter, and a new saturated fat bar chart in the Appendix. References were updated where newer information was available along with updates to some of the nutrient information (for example copper values have been added and niacin values updated throughout). Beef and nutrition research continues to evolve and Canada Beef will update and refine this foundational tool to ensure it remains current. A digital version of the 65-page Toolkit is available online in the thinkbeef.ca resource section at thinkbeef.ca/groundbeeftoolkit. Dietitians and other professionals are welcome to re-purpose any portion of it for their own outreach efforts. A new-design print version is also available to order in an easier-to-handle coil-bound format. Position paper on Alzheimer’s disease Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, is on the rise. According to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, the number of people with dementia is expected to nearly triple from 2020 to 2050. What’s the relationship between diet and this devastating disease? Canada Beef identified that it was important to revisit long-held assumptions about red meat’s role in cognitive health. The most recent evidence between red meat consumption and Alzheimer’s was reviewed and published in a position paper which can be found at thinkbeef.ca/the-thinkbeef-position.
