![]() Podcasts and other online discussion forums are a great way to share information about Canadian beef and sustainable cattle production, especially when the hosts and guests are highly regarded experts in their fields with a penchant for initiating thought-provoking discussion. In November, Canada Beef featured University of Lethbridge Research Associate, Dr. Kim Stanford, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Lethbridge principal scientist Dr. Tim McAllister in a Zoom panel discussion called Behind the Apron with Taste Canada. The main topic of discussion was sustainability and beef, with a focus on the role of cattle in sustaining land and diverting food waste. Producers Will Stoneman and Kasey Whitwell from First Line Angus in Ontario rounded out the discussion from a family farm perspective. The Behind the Apron panel discussion was hosted by Steven Hellmann, founder of the Foodies Group, and aimed at culinary professionals and the general public. Look for the discussion on the Taste Canada YouTube channel. The Cows on the Planet podcast series is another example of Canada Beef’s investment in this area. Hosted by Drs. Stanford and McAllister, Cows on the Planet has 12 podcasts available and plans to release 36 episodes. Episodes released to date are on the science of beef production, beef, and the impacts of cattle on the environment. ![]() The public-facing podcasts examine topics ranging from the role of cattle in managing food waste to the fat in the meat that we eat and feature guest speakers from conservation groups, to scientists specializing in Life Cycle Analysis. Ron Glaser, vice president of corporate affairs, Canada Beef, said Cows on the Planet does a good job of presenting complex science in an engaging manner to help Canadians understand the beef industry in an objective way. Indeed, the Cows on the Planet hosts end each episode by stating that nothing they are talking about in their podcasts represents the views of their funders and that they are looking for honest opinions and perspectives from farmers, scientists, and other experts in the area they are discussing. Canada Beef provided matching funding of $13,000 with the Beef Cattle Research Council to support the Cows on the Planet podcast series. Glaser recognized the value of the investment, with Canada Beef having previously worked with Dr. McAllister to develop and inform communication efforts with food media and Dietitians of Canada around sustainability when it comes to beef. Glaser noted that it’s absolutely essential that information being put forward to consumers is fact-based and scientifically sound, and it helps that the information is delivered by bonafide experts in their field. Cows on the Planet covers a range of hot-button issues. The first podcast was: Are Feedlots Cruel to Cattle? Other podcasts discuss everything from How Much Do Cattle Contribute to Climate Change? to Should Cattle Be Replaced with Native Species Such As Bison? Cows on the Planet is available on Spotify, Apple and other podcast platforms. Back to main page |
