Food Service Business Week
For the first time in 11 months, COVID-19 restrictions on bars and restaurants were lifted in larger cities as the nation looks to balance bringing the pandemic-hit economy back on track and preventing a resurgence of infections. Restaurant owners are looking forward to sales recovery as the country approaches the high-demand season.

Canada Beef International Institute (CBII) Japan participated in Food Service Business Week 2021 held October 7 – 8, 2021, aligning with CBII’s supply partners. CBII secured three booths to display Canadian beef products and distribute brochures.

As the leading foodservice industry tradeshow in Japan, Food Service Business Week provides business expansion opportunities for food and beverage suppliers and maximizes business networking opportunities for both exhibitors and visitors from the foodservice sector.

Global Vision, the in-market distribution partner for Montpak participated at the booth. They displayed a wide range of Montpak veal products, including the ‘Shank Tower’—the name Global Vision uses for the Montpak veal centre-cut.

CBII’s supply partner, Ontario Corn Fed Beef, introduced its newly developed Canada Beef Yakiniku (BBQ) packs, targeting foodservice buyers.

They also showcased their popular Yakiniku cuts under the Canada Beef banner. This includes branded Yakiniku Strips.

Ontario Corn Fed Beef has been working on value added branded products for retail and foodservice with one of its distributors. Products here include Japanese Style Roast Beef and Branded Hamburger Steak.

Japan COVID-19 Update
As the number of new cases continues to decline, Japan reported no deaths linked to the novel coronavirus on November 7, 2021. This is the first time in 15 months that zero COVID-19 fatalities were reported in a single day.

Demand for imported ground beef has increased while Wagyu beef has decreased due to its price hike. Retailers expanded their shelf space for sliced cuts to accommodate seasonal demand. In early October retail beef prices were up 4% year-over-year (YOY) and pork prices were about the same while chicken prices were down 2%.

Japan’s total beef import volumes in September were 58,982 tonnes, up 14% YOY, and imports from Canada recorded 5,492 tonnes, up 63% YOY, resulting in eight consecutive months’ growth. Import volumes of Canadian beef chuck cuts were up 102% YOY and reached 1,926 tonnes due to an increase in demand from the retail sector

South Korea COVID-19 Update
In early November, the number of new COVID-19 cases per day fluctuated between 1,700 and 2,700. The Korean government has implemented the first phase of its living with COVID-19 plan from November 1 as over 81% of the population has received their first COVID-19 vaccination and more than 76% of the population has been fully vaccinated.

The outlook for restaurants has improved as many consumers, tired of home-cooked meals, began visiting restaurants again. Restaurant owners are concerned about the rising prices of food products, including beef.

Retailers on the other hand are somewhat concerned that, as more consumers visit BBQ restaurants more often, this might cause a decrease in sales of beef products at retail.

Korea’s total beef imports in 2021 (January-October quarantine statistics) were 374,089 tonnes, up 7.6% YOY, and imports from Canada were 9,297 tonnes, up 90.9% YOY. Canadian frozen ribs are the leading exporting cut, representing 65% of the total volume.
