Foodservice sector re-opens
According to Travel Trends Reports for 2021, the Mexican Caribbean tops the places where travellers are already showing a strong interest in medium and long-distance travel. These tourist destinations are the first ones in the country to show an economic recovery after more than eight months of restrictions. Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are the first destination of the American Continent to have received the Global Safety Stamp by the World Travel and Tourism Council. The arrival of more than 3M tourists to the islands in the past month have reignited hotel occupancy to more than 85% and it’s estimated that these destinations will reach full occupancy by December.

Over the past few weeks, tourism generated an economic impact of 209.4 million pesos; this has caused the restaurant sector to launch gastronomic events to promote new culinary experiences and restaurant openings. With these gastronomic events, restaurants are looking to increase the number of diners to their destination, especially those affected by the pandemic.

With the goal of contributing to the economic recovery in Quintana Roo, Canada Beef partnered with two restaurants to promote a variety of Canadian beef cuts offered in menus and dishes. The first promotion took place in Isla Mujeres, where Canada Beef and Sigma Foodservice Distributors supported an event for 150 people including media, industry members, hoteliers, chefs and restaurateurs from the Cancun and Mayan Riviera area. Canadian beef ambassador, Chef Federico Lopez, conducted the event which featured cuts such as export rib, rib eye, New York, top sirloin, inside skirt and tenderloin. The event was promoted through local newspapers, news channels and social media platforms, generating new business leads for the distributor.

The second event took place in the chic, coastal town of Tulum, which is known to be a paradise for food lovers. Tulum’s premier fine dining restaurants offer menus highlighting seasonal produce from local markets and farms, along with sustainable seafood and meats. Canada Beef partnered with La Chula Restaurant and Carnes Premium XO distributor, to promote CANADA PRIME and AAA cuts in this upscale tourism destination. Four top chefs, along with owner-chef Jonatán Gómez-Luna (who placed #32 on Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2019) took part in this kickoff event offering unique flavour combinations in dishes that guests had never experienced. The event was promoted through social media stories, reaching more than 6k views in a 48-hour period. Canada Beef was a success among guests and Chefs, and Carnes Premium XO expanded its client base in this area.

COVID-19 Update
Mexico could experience a third wave of COVID-19 in 2021. The Mexican Undersecretariat of Health stated that although several vaccines are in their last phase of development, there is still no effective medicine against the disease. The World Health Organization declared Mexico in a "bad pandemic situation" because at the end of November the number of infections and deaths from the virus had doubled in three weeks. Between January 1 and October 24, 2020, 72% of the mortality cases in the country were related to Coronavirus.

The Health Ministry reported that the accumulated number of infections was 1,107,071 at the end of November, which also became the fourth deadliest month of the pandemic after June, July and August. It appears inevitable that with winter approaching, case numbers rising again, hospitals filling up with coronavirus patients and the federal government ruling out the enforcement of a strict lockdown, Mexico will see high numbers of Covid-19 deaths in the coming weeks and months, deepening the significant pain the pandemic has already inflicted on the nation.

The president of Mexico acknowledged that, although the number of infections is increasing, the federal strategy is to stop the upward trend of the death rate. For this reason, Mexico has begun clinical trials with 1000 vaccine tests purchased from the Chinese laboratory CanSino Biologic, which will have an evaluation period of approximately 12 months.
