Grocery Innovations Canada – GIC Live @ Home
The Grocery Innovations Canada (GIC) show lived up to the “innovation” in its name this year by hosting its first virtual trade show and conference November 24 - 26.

Participating in trade shows has always been an important part of Canada Beef’s strategic plan. These shows provide a one-stop-shop to meet with clients face-to-face as well as engage with new audiences, showcase products and resources and develop business opportunities. But how can you participate in such a large event during these times of social distancing and limited interaction—the answer is “virtually.”

According to GIC, this pioneering event provided even more engagement opportunities complete with keynotes, workshops, trade show booths, the Insights & Innovations hub (immersive engagement area). Trade show booths provided a virtual experience where attendees immerse themselves in exhibitors’ curated environments showcasing their latest products and services, and where sales directly take place. Online retailers and buyers from around the world accessed videos, downloaded sales sheets and information, and chatted with vendors live, in a multitude of languages.

Canada Beef was a sponsor of the tradeshow and fully embraced the new technology, presenting a virtual booth that highlighted Canada Beef resources including Channel Marketing programs and services as well as Consumer Culinary resources and the technical and culinary resources available from the Canadian Beef Centre of Excellence.

“We found there were a greater number of retail corporate managers in attendance, as well as more people from outside the greater Toronto area than we would usually see at the tradeshow,” says Duane Ellard, Director, Channel Marketing for Canada Beef. “It was convenient for these busy executives to attend the show from their offices and many appreciated the opportunity to connect with industry.”

According to Ellard, the Canada Beef virtual booth had 120 visits, 143 resources were reviewed, there were 33 virtual discussions and eight meetings were booked for after the show to discuss programs and services.

In addition to the virtual booths, the GIC Live @Home Insights & Innovations Stage featured a number of presentations including two from Canada Beef. The Quality with Confidence presentations featured “Safeguarding the Canadian Meat Supply” with Dr. Xianqin Yang, Agriculture Canada and Agri-Food Canada as well as an overview of Canada Beef and the programs and services available, presented by Michael Young, President of Canada Beef.

“GIC did an excellent job of providing a valuable industry experience and it was great to connect with customers, partners and industry colleagues,” says Ellard.
