Canada Beef President Eric Bienvenue visited W .A. Ranches at the University of Calgary in October.

The 19,000-acre cow-calf family ranch was gifted to the University of Calgary in 2018 by ranch owners J.C. (Jack) Anderson and his daughter Wynne Chisholm. The gift enabled the nearly 1,000 head working ranch near Cochrane, Alta, to serve as an ‘outdoor classroom’ within the university’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM), with day-to-day ranching practices supporting the advancement of animal welfare and education through research and learning opportunities for students, aspiring veterinarians and young ranchers taking part in youth programming.

W.A. Ranches’ mission is to conduct applied research aimed at improving cattle welfare, health, and management to achieve sustainable/regenerative agriculture. The ranch has three main sites with associated facilities to support ranching, research, teaching, and outreach activities, as well as land west of the main sites that is leased from the Alberta Government for seasonal grazing purposes, notes their website.

Research projects conducted at W.A. Ranches focus largely on cow-calf management. The herd is typically managed to calve in mid to late spring, with natural breeding over the summer, and late fall weaning. Exposure to seasonal production and herd health management practices at a working ranch enables veterinary undergraduates to gain more hands-on experience on topics such as low-stress handling, vaccinations, pregnancy checking and bull semen evaluations.

Bienvenue was impressed by the operations vast ranch lands in addition to the research, learning opportunities, and outreach provided by W.A. Ranches. He noted UCalgary experts also collaborate at W.A. Ranches to address the challenges facing farmers, ranchers, and the food production industry.

Valued at $44 million, W.A. Ranches stands as the largest ranch-donation gift (monetary) to a North American university and at the largest gift of ranch acres to a university in Canada.
