Canada Beef at WOFEX
Canada Beef participated in the World Food Expo (WOFEX) 2022 trade show, held in Manila, the Philippines on August 3 – 6. The WOFEX show is the key trade show in the Philippines targeting the food and beverage industry. Canada Beef joined forces with the Embassy of Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada (AAFC) to host three activities during the show.

Canadian beef sampling at Canada Pavilion
The Canada Beef booth was a popular destination for show visitors where samples of two Canadian beef cuts (short rib, rib eye) prepared by a professional chef were offered for tasting. Food industry attendees took the opportunity to gather information about Canadian beef and to see and taste the premium quality Canadian beef has to offer. This heightened interest in premium grain-fed Canadian beef for the Philippine market.

Young Chef Culinary Competition
Canada Beef and the Embassy of Canada hosted a Canadian food competition in conjunction with the WOFEX Young Chef competition event. Seven Philippine schools participated and showcased their culinary talent and expertise in Canadian and Philippine cuisines. There were three courses included in the competition using Canadian ingredients. The Canadian beef cut, top sirloin cap, was used to create the main course. The winning team received prizes from all the sponsors. In addition, Canada beef provided E-learn access to students from the winning team to encourage them to learn more about the advantages of Canadian beef.

Flavours of Canada Dinner
Canada Beef partnered with the Embassy of Canada to host a 'Flavours of Canada’ dinner on August 4. Attendance included 300 guests from the foodservice industry, media influencers, the chef community, importer/distributors and retail buyers. Canadian beef rib eye was served as the main course. The opportunity to sample this product at dinner supports the momentum for Canadian beef in this market.

COVID-19 Update
The daily number of infections remains around 20,000 in recent months. The majority (98%) of infections appear to have only minor symptoms. The Taiwan border quarantine controls remain tight compared to surrounding Asia countries. Taiwan still requires 3-4 quarantine days for all inbound passengers. Masks are also mandatory on public transit and in open spaces.

China/Hong Kong Updates
Canadian beef promotion on Tmall International
Shanghai Bestmeat is a well-respected meat supplier with experience operating on e-commerce platforms. CBII China supported Shanghai Bestmeat with its new business launch in June on the Tmall International platform with a five-day promotion featuring three Canadian beef products including rib eye, striploin and tenderloin.

Highlighting Canadian beef products on the Tmall International main page plus the offer of a ‘buy one, get one free’ promotion helped Bestmeat catch consumer attention quickly. They received 490 orders within five days, an 8% increase compared with the non-promotion period.

According to Mr. Terry Jiang, general manager of Shanghai Bestmeat, “the promotion was successful overall. There was an increase in sales and it helped Bestmeat form a fan group in a Wechat private domain within a very short time,” he said.

As a loyal partner of Canadian beef, Jiang added that he hopes the limitation on imports can be lifted soon.

COVID-19 Update
China's economy grew by 0.4% in the second quarter of 2022 compared to the previous year posting 2.5% growth in the first half of the year. With the pandemic well-controlled and the arrival of the summer tourism season, the domestic tourism market improved in July, which supported the recovery of the foodservice industry. However, in beginning of August a wave of COVID-19 infections hit a number of tourism hot spots and so far China has nine provinces registering more than 100 cases per day.

Hong Kong's epidemic rebounded recently, with more than 6,000 cases a day for several days. The Hong Kong government continues its existing social distancing measures. Hong Kong reduced hotel quarantine dates for overseas visitors from August but the border reopening with the Mainland without quarantine measures is not yet allowed. In early August, the government began handing out the second round of vouchers to citizens, continuing to boost local consumption and help economic recovery.
