Canada Beef attends health care practitioner education conference
Canada Beef exhibited at Pri-Med, an annual medical education conference and trade show organized for primary care health practitioners (doctors, nurses, pharmacists). Over 1,800 healthcare professionals attended the national conference, with more than 300 attendees spending time at the Canada Beef booth.

Canada Beef Director, Health and Nutrition Karine Rekunyk said most trade show booths were pharmaceutical companies, so interest in a food commodity was high. “There was some surprise and curiosity among attendees about why we were there and the type of education we were providing. Visitors to the booth were highly engaged and eager to learn,” she said.

There was particular interest in the Thinkbeef.ca resources related to iron, infant feeding, bone health, and research summaries. Subsequently, information about ordering Canada Beef’s patient education materials was in high demand.

“Overall, most of the health care providers we spoke with have little knowledge about beef nutrition and sustainability, and the conference was an excellent opportunity to raise awareness on key facts as well as debunk common myths,” said Rekunyk.

A quiz developed by the team specifically for this conference was completed by over 100 attendees; many who completed it said they were keeping it for future reference as many surprising facts were new to them.

Many in-depth conversations were sparked with attendees, such as:
  • Over the three days, several attendees shared that they were vegetarian but were now willing to try beef.
  • Several mentioned that advice to their patients to limit red meat would cease.
  • Many mentioned that Health Canada’s infant feeding guidelines (which recommend beef as a first food) was new/ unknown information, and it would change their advice to new parents.
  • Most everyone significantly overestimated how much red meat Canadians consume.
  • Interest in the fatty acid profile of red meat and surprise that beef is not just saturated fat, nor the primary source of saturated fat.
  • The definition of lean and extra lean consistently surprised folks.
  • Negative concerns about beef expressed included raising cholesterol/heart health, environmental/climate concerns, and animal welfare.
It was a successful event with great interest expressed in Canadian beef subject matter, both nutritional and environmental.
