Culinary Training for the Marriott Group Hotels in Hangzhou
CBII China facilitated a culinary training program for the Marriott Group hotel chefs in Hangzhou on March 2, 2022. A total of 30 executive chefs from the Marriott Group along with 15 staff from the Marriott Group Greater China Operations and Food and Beverage (F&B) management team attended the training. A CBII China representative introduced the Canadian Beef Advantage followed by a professional cutting demonstration of three Canadian beef cuts.

The training program was designed to educate Marriott chefs, the operations team and the F&B management team about the advantages of Canadian beef. CBII China also introduced local Canadian beef suppliers after the program to facilitate further business opportunities.

COVID-19 Updates
After nearly three months, the daily tally of COVID-19 cases in China dropped significantly. With Beijing's lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and Shanghai's resumption of normal life, cities are opening up and working towards stimulating consumer consumption. From January to April 2022, total retail sales were -0.2% YOY and catering revenue was -5.1% YOY. In April, catering revenue plunged by 22.7% YOY due to the severe impact of the pandemic in some cities, especially the lockdown in Shanghai.

With Beijing’s announcement of a resumption of dine-in services in early June and with life in Shanghai gradually returning to normal, the economy is gearing up with the restaurant industry leading the charge.

Hong Kong's economy has yet to recover. Despite the potential risk of epidemic recurrence, the government believes that with the gradual relaxation of social distancing measures and the launch of e-coupons to encourage consumption, the local economy will recover and grow slightly in the second half of the year.

In Hong Kong, retail business has dropped to around 50% of its peak sales during the epidemic. Traffic in restaurants is growing and has recovered to 85% of the pre-pandemic levels. However, the sales recovery of the catering industry is far behind and at 50-60% of pre-pandemic sales.
