In-store sampling programs resume at retail
In April, Japan’s beef imports from Canada reached 5,600 tonnes, up 11% year-over-year (YOY) and a 108% increase over the previous month. Canadian beef sales volume has been growing at retail while the foodservice industry continues on the path to recovery.

As the country’s pandemic measures were fully lifted in March, Canada Beef International Institute (CBII) Japan retail partner Kanehide Supermarket resumed in-store sampling demonstrations at 20 locations in May and June. Kanehide is a regional retailer operating 58 outlets in Okinawa, and a long-time supporter of Canadian chilled beef.

In-store sampling events are one of CBII Japan’s key tactics to raise consumer awareness of Canadian beef and contribute to an increase in sales. Canada Beef point-of-sale materials (labels, posters, shelf-talkers and Canada Beef flags) were distributed to Kanehide supermarkets.

CBII Japan and Kanehide produced co-branded posters featuring the Canadian Beef Advantage. Kanehide greatly expanded its meat case offerings to promote Canadian beef during the promotion, resulting in a 50% sales increase in Canadian chilled beef.

Japan COVID-19 Update
Travellers wearing masks crowded train stations and airports across Japan during the Golden Week holiday period between April 28 and May 8, 2022. This was the first time in three years that a pandemic state of emergency wasn’t in place. Japan will resume allowing inbound tourism, which had been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, and its borders will be reopened to foreign tourists starting on June 10, 2022.

Restaurant sales in April were up 13.5% YOY but still down 8.1% from 2019. Sales at barbeque restaurants rose 28.1% YOY due to an increase in demand from family and friends gatherings during the holidays.

South Korea COVID-19 Update
The daily number of infections declined to around 10,000 in early June. Thanks to the end of most social distancing rules and an increase in outdoor activities, beef consumption from the foodservice sector has gradually improved. Consumer prices continue to rise, 5.4% in May YOY, the highest in 14 years, and prices of imported beef also continue to increase, 27.9% YOY.

Korea’s total beef imports in 2022 (January-May quarantine statistics) were 194,517 tonnes, up 8.1% YOY, and imports from Canada were 10,550 tonnes, up 135.3% YOY. Canadian ribs and blade/clod were the leading exporting cuts, representing 49% and 27% of the total volume, respectively.
