Canadian beef at Grand Mayfull Hotel Taipei, Taiwan
CBII Taiwan, in conjunction with the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, partnered with the 5-star Grand Mayfull Hotel Taipei on a month-long Canadian food festival. The promotion took place from February 22 to March 31, 2023. Five Canadian beef cuts were on the menu, including AAA ribeye, boneless short ribs, top blade, short plate and rib fingers. These items were available at their well-known buffet restaurant Pallette; pan-seared Canada AAA ribeye was offered at their Italian restaurant GMT Italia.

A press launch was held on February 22 with 30 mainstream media attending including broadcast, print and social media influencers. Canadian chef Quentin Glabus was invited to be the hotel’s guest chef during the promotion, bringing Canadian flavour to the menu. Promotional materials were prominently displayed at the hotel and in guest rooms.

Social media played a big part in the promotion, with content posted on the hotel and Canada Beef’s Instagram pages. In addition, exclusive offers were sent to the hotel’s membership through the hotel app. Over 300,000 social media hits were obtained.

This collaboration reached a wide audience of hotel diners and social media consumers, increasing awareness of high-quality Canadian beef.

China Update
Canadian Food and Drink Promotion workshop in Beijing
Canada Beef International Institute (CBII) China participated in the Canadian Food and Drink Promotion workshop hosted by the Embassy of Canada to China which took place at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing on March 29, 2023.

The workshop was designed to promote high-quality Canadian food and drink to local importers, distributors, foodservice operators, e-commerce platform buyers and influencers in Beijing. The CBII China representative provided a presentation on Canadian beef attributes and advantages during the workshop to the 40 attendees. Canadian beef brochures and merchandising guides were also distributed.

This event provided a platform for CBII China to leverage the Canadian government's endorsement and maintain the profile of high-quality Canadian beef. It also allowed the team to develop potential Canadian beef sales in the North China market. Canadian beef is still under suspension in China, however most workshop participants expressed interest in Canadian beef and will consider purchasing Canadian beef once trade resumes.

COVID-19 Updates
After the Spring Festival holiday, the number of COVID-19 cases in China trended downward, although daily reported cases remained above 4,000. The Chinese economy shows signs of gradual recovery. While economic stabilization policies remain in place, several economic indicators improved over the first two months of 2023.

Hong Kong lifted its mask mandate in March. Statistics demonstrate there are no signs of a pandemic rebound. The city is focused on reviving its economy. The number of visitors to Hong Kong in February was 1.46 million. It was the first time more than one million people visited Hong Kong in a single month since the start of the epidemic in February 2020, equivalent to about 30% of pre-pandemic levels.
