FOODEX JAPAN 2023 Canada Beef International Institute (CBII) Japan along with Canadian beef supplier representatives, participated in one of Asia’s largest food and beverage exhibitions, FOODEX JAPAN, to grow Canadian beef exports to Japan, valued at more than C$500 million last year (up 18.4% vs 2021). Aligning with other premium Canadian food and beverage products under the Canada banner, CBII Japan showcased Canadian beef in the new-look booth. The Canada Beef booth featured representatives from two Canadian beef packers and their major beef importers/distributors to promote their Canadian beef brands and programs. Canadian beef distributors participated in the booth and spoke with attendees. These interactions provided the opportunity to talk about their Canadian beef brands, beef cut offerings and available resources. There were many productive meetings held with both current and prospective retail customers. The show saw large crowds, with many visitors to the booth where Canadian beef demonstrations and sampling took place. Canada Beef hired a professional chef to conduct hourly Canadian Beef Advantage demonstrations. More than 4,000 samples were distributed over the four days and media covered the event. FOODEX JAPAN attracted around 2,562 exhibitors and 73,789 visitors (a 120% increase over last year) from Japan and 60 countries/regions. The end of the COVID-19 border controls, first introduced in February 2020, is expected to help revive inbound tourism to Japan, where spending by foreign visitors in 2021 plunged to a fraction of the record CAD $36 billion in 2019. South Korea COVID-19 Update Daily new infections have recently been stable at around 4,000 to 14,500 at the end of March and early April. New coronavirus variants that could lead to surges have not been discovered. The government lifted one of the last-remaining COVID restrictions on March 20, allowing people to not mask on subways, taxis, and buses. People are still required to wear masks in hospitals, pharmacies, nursing homes, welfare centres for the disabled, and mental health centres.
