To support the sharing of information about the role of beef in life-long cognitive health, Canada Beef’s Health and Nutrition Team held a webinar on the importance of nutrition on brain and mental health. This is a timely topic; according to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, the number of people with dementia is expected to nearly triple from 2020 to 2050.

The free, one-hour webinar was offered exclusively to health professionals on April 20 and more than 1,500 people registered for the event. It featured Canada’s top nutrition and brain health dietitian, Doug Cook, who shared the latest evidence about the interplay of the human brain and diets and why food choices matter. According to Cook: “Many to most of the foundational nutrients that are crucial for good brain health are found in nutrient-dense animal-based foods.”

Dementia researchers have suggested that previous assumptions about red meat need to be revisited considering more recent evidence. Studies have shown, among other findings, that eating meat (i.e., not being vegetarian) was independently associated with better memory function in older adults and with a four-fold decrease in the risk of dementia, and those consuming meat weekly or more are 27% less likely to have cognitive disorders.

The webinar was a joint initiative between Canada Beef, Canadian Pork Council, Dairy Farmers of Canada, and Turkey Farmers of Canada. Canada Beef also supported the webinar with a nutrition backgrounder written by Cook and posted on the ThinkBeef.ca website.

Cook has over a decade of experience working in addictions and mental health at St Joseph's Health Centre and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health with a variety of patient populations, including adult group education on this specific topic.
