![]() Foodex Japan 2021 As the leading Food & Beverage tradeshow in Japan and Asia, Foodex Japan provides business expansion opportunities for food & beverage suppliers while maximizing business meeting opportunities for both exhibitors and visiting buyers from a wide range of the Japanese food industry. Canada Beef International Institute (CBII) Japan participated in Foodex Japan 2021 (March 9 – 12, 2021) aligning with other premium food and beverage products to promote Canadian beef under the Canada banner. CBII Japan secured four booths (36 square meters) to display Canadian beef products, distribute brochures and engage with buyers—25,754 Food & Beverage buyers visited the show over the four days. ![]() Given that Japan is closed to most foreign travellers due to COVID-19, the event was smaller. However, the smaller exhibition allowed prospective customers to spend more time learning about the attributes of Canadian beef with a newly designed booth that highlights food safety, the Farm-to-Table quality system and the global services offered by Canada Beef. ![]() For those not able to attend in person, there were virtual exhibitions. These offline and online platforms provided the opportunity to introduce Canadian beef supply partners and promotion & marketing services available to end-user customers. ![]() The Japanese National Bureau of Statistics of Japan reported that per capita beef consumption in February continued to grow, resulting in thirteen consecutive months’ growth. Many buyers visited the Canada Beef booth to find new marketing tools and Canadian beef items to meet an increase in demand from people staying at home. YTD February 2021, import volumes of Canadian beef offal were up 37%, showing that Canadian beef three BBQ offal cuts (outside skirt, hanging tender, and tongue) are trading above last year. Japan Covid-19 Update The fourth wave of COVID-19 is hitting across Japan, in particular, the Osaka prefecture, where Japan’s second-largest city is located. People in Japan aged 65 and older began receiving coronavirus vaccinations on April 13 and enough COVID-19 vaccines will be secured for all residents age 16 or older by the end of September. CBII’s distribution partners are financially stable due to an increase in demand from people staying home. The 30 day- long safeguard measures being enforced against US beef were lifted on April 17 and tariffs on US beef were back to 25.8% from 38.5%. Logistical hurdles and labour shortages are still causing beef supply issues in both North American and Oceanian beef exporting countries, which represent a market share of 97% in this market, resulting in a short supply of imported beef in Japan. Japan’s total beef import volumes in February were down 13% YOY but imports from Canada increased by 1% to 3,771 tonnes and were up 18% from the previous month. South Korea Covid-19 Update Due to the rising number of new COVID-19 cases per day in April, the South Korean government is concerned that the fourth wave might be imminent. Level 2 social distancing guidelines, the third-highest in a five-tier system, have been maintained for the greater Seoul area for over two months. The ban on private gatherings of more than four people is still in effect. However, the consumer confidence index has been rising in 2021 and has recorded the highest in March since January of last year. Many department stores and supermarkets have been experiencing a sales increase since mid-March, compared to last year. It is estimated that overall sales of beef and home-meal-replacement products, mostly containing imported beef, in the retail sector have been steady in April. The foodservice sector, however, is still suffering greatly. According to Korea’s quarantine statistics in 2021 (January 1 – March 31), Korea’s total frozen beef imports were 73,456mt, up 3.3% from 2020 (Jan-Mar). Imports from Canada were 2,901mt (including 1,869mt of ribs, 860mt of blade/clod, 159mt of chuck roll, and 12mt of brisket), up 136.7% YOY.
