Trade shows in Japan Trade shows have always played an important role in the food industry’s marketing efforts. Although pandemic restrictions placed limitations on in-person opportunities during the past two years, Japan has recently reinstated in-person trade shows with social-distancing restrictions in place. Canada Beef International Institute (CBII) Japan’s supply partners showcased their popular beef cuts and newly developed Canadian beef value-added products at eight trade shows over the past fiscal year (April 2021 – March 2022). In February and March 2022, CBII Japan supported Canadian beef and veal suppliers by exhibiting at three trade shows. Japan Supermarket Tradeshow February 16 - 18 Canada Beef launched a newly designed booth that highlights the Canadian beef grading system and Canadian beef recipes developed for retail customers. The show attracted over 43,000 buyers (a 60% increase over last year). Grocery sales in January were about the same as the previous year but still up 5.8% compared with the same period in 2019 (pre-COVID-19). There were many productive meetings held at the venue with both current and prospective retail customers. Food Style Okinawa February 21 – 22 Okinawa is a popular Japanese tourist destination and foodservice is a vital part of its large tourism industry. The Food Style show focused on the foodservice industry with attendance reaching over 5,000 buyers, most coming from the industry. This was the first time CBII Japan participated in this regional trade show that provided an opportunity to meet with local buyers and in-market partners. Foodex Japan March 8 -11 CBII Japan participated in Foodex Japan 2022, the leading food and beverage tradeshow in Japan and Asia. Aligning with other premium Canadian food and beverage products under the Canada banner, CBII Japan showcased Canadian beef in the new-look booth. Given that Japan is closed to most foreign travellers due to COVID-19, the event was smaller than before the pandemic. Over 34,000 buyers (up 30% from 2021) visited the show where prospective customers spent time learning about the attributes of Canadian beef. Japan COVID-19 Update In February, Japan's daily count of new COVID-19 cases exceeded 100,000 for the first time since the pandemic began as the highly transmissible Omicron variant spread rapidly across Japan. However, in March, the peak of the Omicron wave seems to have passed and emergency measures were lifted in some areas. Japan’s total beef import volumes in January were 47,691 tonnes, down 8% year-over-year (YOY) and imports from Canada were 3,856 tonnes, up 20% YOY. Beef chuck cuts grew five-fold YOY, representing 38% of the total volume of Canadian beef imports due to an increase in demand from the retail sector. South Korea COVID-19 Update In early March, the number of daily COVID-19 infections reached an all-time high of 342,000 and are expected to increase further. Despite this, the government has eased social distancing rules, dropped the vaccine pass system and increased restaurant operation hours by one hour to 11:00 pm. The maximum number of people allowed at private gatherings remains at six people. Korea’s total beef imports in 2022 (Jan-Feb) were 73,567 tonnes, up 19.8% YOY, and imports from Canada were 2,935 tonnes, up 53.8% YOY. Canadian blade/clod and ribs were the leading exporting cuts, representing 49% and 32% of the total volume, respectively. Back to main page Japan Team Yuko Onizawa, Ichiro Kiyotomi, Takako Toyama |
