Staying on top of the latest evidence There are many nutrition studies released every year and some of these focus on red meat in the diet. Canada Beef’s Health and Nutrition team review these important studies on an ongoing basis and identify topics and findings that are of interest to the public, the media and to Canada Beef. “Research is vitally important and we need to stay on top of these studies and the findings,” said Karine Rekunyk, director health and nutrition, Canada Beef. “We review the research, distill and organize it, and find the pieces that are relevant. This gives us quick access to the information and we can respond to issues in the media as well as identify findings that influence and impact the work done by Canada Beef.” Research Summaries Research summaries can be found on the Just the Facts section of the ThinkBeef.ca website. “These are high-level overviews of what the study was for and what it found. Anyone can access this information and these summaries provide information for health professionals and answer questions that the media might have about these studies,” added Rekunyk. Rekunyk recently added two new summaries based on research released in 2021. One of the summaries highlighted the prevalence of inadequate iron intakes in Canada. That research informed a number of tactics used by Canada Beef including placing articles in health and nutrition publications and providing information referencing the studies to health professionals at conferences. Health & Nutrition Fact Sheet Rekyunk also uses research findings to update Canada Beef fact sheets that are used by consumers, health professionals, the media and other industry partners. “Fact sheets are an important resource,” said Rekunyk. ”We recently updated the Health and Nutrition Fact Sheet for the first time since 2016. This is a foundational document where key up-to-date information is gathered in one easy reference piece.” Available on Canada Beef’s website, the fact sheet was promoted to Dietitians of Canada on their website and through their e-newsletter which is sent to 9,500 dietitian members. You can find the fact sheet here. Position Papers In addition to summaries and fact sheets, the research informs position statements developed as backgrounders, and provides intelligence to support the policy work of industry partners. The information can be found on the thinkbeef.ca website. Two new position papers were added recently including an updated and revised position statement on Front of Pack warning labels for ground beef and a new backgrounder with a deep dive into how beef consumption in Canada is measured. “These position papers provide valuable background information and are used by staff, stakeholders and industry. Some of the information was used recently by the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association for some of their policy work,” said Rekunyk. Back to main page KARINE REKUNYK Director, Health and Nutrition |
