Canadian Beef Virtual Boutique
E-commerce is growing at a rapid pace and consumers are switching to this more convenient and accessible way of purchasing products. The latest technological developments make online browsing and shopping harder to resist and more convenient than ever. The recent advances in the world of e-commerce are offering all kinds of new and exciting experiences to customers who are looking for innovation and a different shopping experience—the latest trend is virtual reality.

To provide consumers with this new technological experience while at the same time being able to offer information on Canadian products, Canada Beef Latin America and Mexico Team (LATAM) finished the first stage of its Virtual Beef Boutique. This virtual store can be accessed from the LATAM webpage and provides visitors with the full browsing experience they would expect from a real butcher shop. The result is an online “store” that consumers will explore just as they would in real life but from the comfort of their own homes. Customers can browse the virtual store with the simple use of a mouse, viewing different Canadian beef cuts available in the Mexican Market, then click on them to have a full 3D view of each cut as well as a detailed cut description shown in a screen.

The Canadian Beef virtual boutique has different areas of interest, where customers will learn about Canada’s high-quality beef grades and standards, industry programs, a “kitchen” area with information on cooking methods and steak preparations, a marketing materials section to download (after providing an email address) different electronic cookbooks, booklets, merchandising guides, recipe sheets and other similar materials.

Customers can also click on different distributor logos and be redirected to their e-commerce websites to browse and purchase beef cuts from each one of them. Through this initiative, Canada beef is seeking to enhance the customer experience offered by e-commerce sites and turn it into a highly effective tool for generating traffic to distributors’ e-commerce stores. This 3D experience will provide a database with metrics, click statistics and visitor behaviour inside the platform including visits to distributors’ online stores.

COVID-19 Update
As of February 24, the Ministry of Health reported 2,256,757 confirmed cases of coronavirus, 1.6 million people recovered and 182,815 confirmed deaths. 1.9 million people have been immunized. Health officials said they planned to vaccinate most people by the fall but according to the COVID-19 vaccination tracking service, Mexico has vaccinated just under 720,000 residents. In comparison, the U.S. has inoculated 43.2 million people. At this pace, Mexico would need more than 60 years to vaccinate 70% of its population; therefore the U.S. has offered to help Mexico with its vaccine roll out as a way to help speed up economic recovery along the U.S.-Mexico border. The manufacturing supply chain at the California border alone is valued at $2.5 billion, generating an annual gross regional product of $255 billion.

Shopping in supermarkets continues to be different during the pandemic. Agility and adaptability are critical to the health of food businesses. Consumers have new expectations of retailers that go beyond product availability and the usual quality of in-store experiences. There is increased pressure on retailers to ensure that consumers in the store are safe and that their time in the store is short and efficient. The foodservice sector in Mexico continues to operate with restrictions and faces the challenges of regaining consumer confidence and of investing in other sales channels, such as digital and home delivery. The private sector has proposed that consumption in restaurants be deductible up to 100%, and on the operational side, proposals aim to promote tourist campaigns, reactivation protocols and even the emergence of anti-COVID-19 hygiene badges. The US-Mexico border continues closed until March 22, 2021. The recovery speed from this sector will depend largely on financial subsidies and State Governments’ aid.
