South Korea resumes imports of Canadian Beef
Canada Beef welcomes the quick resumption of beef trade with South Korea announced on January 19, 2022, by South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MAFRA). The temporary suspension, in place since December 21, 2021, followed the detection of an atypical bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) case in Canada reported by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in December. MARFA has now lifted the suspension on Canadian beef and beef products and resumed normal import quarantine procedures.

South Korea is currently Canada’s fifth most important beef export destination. Canadian beef exports to South Korea have grown quickly over the past two years, increasing 130% in volume to 12,178 MT and 207% in value to CAD$108.7 million for the first 11 months of 2021 alone. On January 1, 2022, the import tariff applied in South Korea to Canadian beef imports under the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement (CKFTA) fell to 18.6%. Under CKFTA, tariffs are reduced each January 1, with all tariffs and safeguard duties on Canadian beef products to be eliminated by 2030.

To help further growth of beef sales in this market, Canada Beef provides support for marketing and promotional projects that help both Canadian beef exporters and their Canadian beef importers, distributors, retailers and foodservice sector clients in South Korea. Examples of projects supported by Canada Beef in South Korea during the past year include traditional and online retail and restaurant promotions and the provision of point of sales materials and merchandise. Demand building events and initiatives supported include Canadian beef tasting, merchandising and cooking sessions, an exhibition at the Seoul Food Show, advertisements in major meat industry publications, a dedicated Canada Beef Korean language website and social media marketing.

Canada Beef provides support for Canadian beef importer and distributor in Japan
Canada Beef’s Export Market Development Program provides cost-shared funding support for eligible Canadian beef representative-company initiated projects and activities with the goals of increasing Canadian beef export volumes and value.

The Promotion and Marketing (PMP) segment of the program offers cost-shared support for the development, production and distribution of eligible branded, co-branded or generic marketing materials, collateral, sales and promotion programs, co-op advertising/social media, tasting programs, consumer marketing and recipe development.

A recent example is Canada Beef’s support for Foods-I Co. Ltd., a Canadian beef importer and distributor and Canadian beef brand license partner based in Japan. Foods-I applied for PMP cost-shared support to completely redesign and upgrade their Canada Beef House online store located on the Rakuten e-commerce platform, the largest online shopping platform in Japan and one of the largest in the world. On this site, a variety of Canadian beef cuts are promoted and offered for purchase to Japanese consumers. To view their online store, visit www.rakuten.ne.jp/gold/motonland/

According to Foods-I, this upgrade was meant to meet the demand from current and potential customers and increase the number of Canadian beef online promotions. Both the landing page and product pages featuring nine different cuts were redesigned. Future upgrades involve the inclusion of the Canadian beef logo to replace the current logo being used. As a direct result of this project and the support provided by Canada Beef, Foods-I reported that they expect to attract significantly more consumers to their online store and to increase their Canadian beef sales by 50% over the next 12-month period.

Canadian beef exports to Japan for the first 11 months of 2021 are up 38% in volume and 51% in value compared to the first 11 months of 2020. Japan remains Canada’s second-largest beef export market after the U.S.
