Indonesia and the Philippines are an opportunity for grain-fed Canadian beef as both countries seek to diversify their beef imports from a food security perspective. Canada Beef’s President Eric Bienvenue and Director, Market Development, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and Hong Kong, Deana Kao, along with Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) President Nathan Phinney and Senior Director, Government and Public Affairs, Jennifer Babcock represented the beef industry during the mission and met with Minister Ng to discuss the Indo-Pacific as well as the Canada-United States (U.S.) relationship. In addition to the formal TCTM program, Canada Beef and the CCA met with local importers, distributors, retailers and foodservice industry representatives in both countries to showcase Canadian beef, the Canadian Beef Advantage and position Canada as a reliable supplier of high-quality protein. Canadian beef was promoted to local buyers and food industry influencers in the workshops organized by Canada Beef. It was served and featured at most of the networking events organized for participants and local industry invitees in this mission, along with awareness building of the stewardship and care of Canadian beef producers and Canada’s sustainable beef cattle production. ![]() In related events at the TCTM, Minister Ng and Indonesia’s Minister of Trade announced the conclusion of negotiations of the Canada-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). As part of the Canada-Indonesia CEPA, Minister Ng signed two MOUs between the governments of Canada and Indonesia, one of which was the Establishment of a Bilateral Dialogue on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Issues. The Canadian beef delegation expressed optimism about working towards resolving technical barriers on beef. Memorandums of understanding (MOUs) between Canadian and Indonesian companies were signed, including one between JBS Foods Canada and Indoguna Utama. The TCTM was the largest ever to Indonesia and the Philippines and a key initiative under Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. The mission provided opportunities for delegates to make important connections that could lead to opportunities that support trade, economic activity and jobs, stated a Global Affairs Canada news release. The Indo-Pacific is Canada’s second-largest regional export market after the U.S. In 2023, annual two-way merchandise trade between Canada and the region was valued at $257 billion.
