The Apple as the Earth: A Lesson in Stewardship

With the help of an apple, you can teach children a valuable lesson!

Take a look at the video below for a sample demonstration of how the apple exercise can be conducted.

As well, here’s a brief summary of the main lessons to be learned through this activity and some topics for discussion:

1. What is agriculture and why is it important?

Agriculture means farming, and includes growing crops and raising animals. It’s important because it is necessary to feed the world. We cannot take agriculture and farmers for granted.

2.What does stewardship of the land mean?

Being a steward of the land means you accept responsibility for protecting the earth. Your actions are evidence of what you value.

3. How can you as an individual be a steward of the land?

Minimizing waste, recycling and composting, using less energy (turn off the lights!), conserving water, etc. You’ll be amazed at the suggestions kids can offer.

4. How can we be stewards of the land on a more global level?

Look for the new innovations and technology that help agriculture become more efficient.

LESSON LEARNED: Overall, it is our responsibility to impress upon children the importance of agriculture and caring for our very limited farm land. Just as farmers must cultivate their fields to ensure their crops or animals can grow and thrive, we must cultivate our children so that they may grow into aware and responsible citizens. This activity is a great start, and at the end you’re left with a tasty and nutritious snack! This activity can be completed by anyone – teachers, parents, grandparents – because we must all work together to deliver this education. Let’s get started!
